EFFECTIVE METHODS OF TEACHING ENGLISH TO DEAF AND NON-SPEAKING LEARNERS
Abstract
This article explores effective methods of teaching English to deaf and non-speaking learners. Since English is a sound-based language, traditional teaching approaches often fail to meet the needs of learners who cannot hear or produce spoken language. The paper examines theoretical frameworks, such as the Bilingual–Bicultural approach and Total Communication, as well as practical strategies, including Visual Phonics, Strategic and Interactive Writing Instruction (SIWI), dialogic reading, speechreading, and the use of modern educational technologies. The analysis emphasizes the significance of visual, multimodal, and inclusive teaching practices in fostering reading and writing skills in English. The findings suggest that when instruction is adapted to learners’ visual strengths and communicative needs, deaf and non-speaking students can successfully acquire English literacy skills. The article provides practical implications for teachers working in inclusive and special education contexts.
