AWARENESS OF PHONETIC AND PHONOLOGICAL DIFFERENCES BETWEEN L1 AND L2
Abstract
Second language acquisition (SLA) is a complex process involving various linguistic elements, among which phonetic and phonological awareness plays a significant role. Learners’ native language (L1) often influences their perception and production of second language (L2) sounds, creating challenges in pronunciation, listening comprehension, and overall communication. Raising awareness of these differences between L1 and L2 sound systems helps learners notice the unique features of the target language, leading to improved speaking and listening skills. This paper explores the significance of phonetic and phonological awareness in SLA, discusses the common difficulties learners encounter, and offers practical strategies for fostering this awareness. Understanding these aspects is vital for educators and learners aiming for greater linguistic competence.
